| A
portion of the proceeds from the book Metu and Lee Learn
About Breast Cancer will go to Foundation of Central
Florida, Metu and Lee Fund. The purpose of the fund is to
assist middle class families whose children have been diagnosed
with any form of cancer, and in tissue typing families for
bone marrow match. The children's oncology services assistance
will be in the form of financial assistance to these families.
As one can imagine, when a child is diagnosed with any form
of cancer, usually one parent will stay home. Besides the
stress of having a sick child, the family faces financial
hardship. The money raised will help families deal with
household expenses, and expenses for the involved child
not covered by insurance. In addition, the siblings end
up doing without. There will be provisions for financial
assistance for the other siblings too.
In summary, this money will help subsidize these families
as they go through a difficult ordeal. The money will come
from donations through the private sector. The criteria
for enrollment will be made available in January 2007.
A
portion of the money from the sale of the book will also
help bone marrow transplant families in the form of paying
for siblings to be tested for being donors. Medicaid, for
example, will pay for a child to get a bone marrow transplant
from the donor bank. It will not pay for siblings to be
tested for compatibility. Obviously, a biological sibling
has a greater chance of being a match.
Finally,
if the child is terminally ill, a portion of the money from
the sale of the book will be put aside to assist with funeral
expenses. Hopefully, this will ease some of the financial
burden during that terrible time.
Direct
contributions are also accepted to assist in the above projects.
